OVERVIEW

Kaleidoscope Theatre Ensemble was founded by Glen S. Jimenez in December 2000 while pursuing an Associates of Arts Degree in Theatre at Rio Hondo Community College after working with the school on a children's theatre program for the local community. He started this company to entertain and to use his creativity to help children learn about theatre and hopefully use it as an alternative to drugs and gangs. His idea was to establish a place where new works (both full length and one-acts) can be performed.

Mission and Vision Statements
With a new idea comes the foundation (or core) of a company. Glen Jimenez wrote the mission and vision statements with the help of a dear friend to truly capture the essence of Kaleidoscope.

Our Mission: To educate and entertain the community and particularly the children through the use of theatre and improvisation.

Our Vision: It is the goal of Kaleidoscope Theatre Ensemble to instill positive values, nurture creativity, encourage individual expression and to provide a positive, life-affirming experience as an alternative to the drugs and violence faced by so many in our modern day society.

Origins: From the vision of our founder, Glen S. Jimenez, Kaleidoscope started as an idea after performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2000. He watched many great plays and thought about starting a company where he can showcase these works as well as his original plays. He contacted playwrights Naomi Wallace and Kevin Rice and acquired the rights to their original works Madman William and One Night in the Life of Denise Ivanovich to launch his company.

With Founding members Adam Jacobo Jr., Dane H. Haines II, and Michael Sainz, Kaleidoscope was incorporated in January 2001, and was launched with Madman William by Wallace was the inaugural production followed by Decisions: 5-One Act Plays by Jimenez.

Children's Theatre: While working on Twelfth Night by Shakespeare at CSU Dominguez Hills, Jimenez gave a copy of his plays to Director Bill Deluca for consideration for his upcoming one-act showcase. After reading them, he offered Jimenez a commission to write a history play for the 10th Annual Cesar Chavez Tardea to be performed by Teatro Dominguez. Jimenez jumped at the chance and Chavez: Rise of a Leader was born.

Since then, it has been the centerpiece of our Children's Theatre program, being performed annually to honor the live of Cesar E. Chavez.

The Next 10 Years and Beyond: Who would have imagined that Kaleidoscope would still be operational as it enters its 10th year? Our goals are to reproduce the inaugural season as well as securing a new and permanent theater space in the South Bay of Los Angeles and create a new Children's play to perform as well. Here's to the possibility of the next 10 years and beyond being filled with wonderful stories and memorable plays that will continue to nurture the creative minds of children and adults.
